Mehendi (henna designs) is a form of body-art practiced in several countries. I've learned about it while I was in India, 10 years ago, and my favourite motif was the tear-drop; perhaps because it looked so familiar. Women in Turkey, Balkans, south Romania – were wearing a couple of drops as belt-buckle. At that time I imagined that the tear 'came' into Macedonia from India, during cultural and commercial exchanges in the time of Alexander the Great.
But: what if the drops were already here?
The GODDESS has similar designs, in exactly the same place. Why?
Perhaps because women are women all over the world.
The drops = the moisture – it's a fertility symbol and, anatomically speaking, they couldn't be located in a better place.
A story says that in west Carpathian Mountains, in Romania, women who didn't want to have any more children, could "lock" the fertility. During a special ritual, keys were attached onto their belt.
If it's true or not, if it works or not, if the keys or the drops have any special powers, we don't know.
But the message it's strong: be wise and don't waste your tears!

O zeita nordica a luat raze de soare si cu ele a tesut lumina; in sud, Atena a transformat-o pe Arahneea in paianjen, de ciuda ca a intrecut-o in maiestrie. Tesutul inseamna ordinea lumii.
Sa devii creator in loc de simplu consumator?

The 'Vrancea shirt' had a specific structure, with its famous spiral sleeves. Unfortunately it came out of use over 100 years ago. It remains a mystery and a fine example of collective design.
Women wanted volume for the upper part of their body, in contrast with the tight, black skirt, defining the slim figure.
The rich sleeves, tightened at the bottom, offer thermic confort; yet this solution of tailoring needs almost twice more fabric than a normal shirt. Is this the reason this shirt came out of use?
Is it possible that women came up with a more pragmatic solution, creating angled embroidery on the straight sleeves, keeping the visual effect and making important savings of fabric? (such shirts are specific for all area of Moldova, both sides of the Prut river).
Is it a secret story behind these unusual sleeves? If you know any, please share it with us !

double spiral: what women want / ce-si doresc femeile

Ce-si doresc femeile / What women want

In cultura berberilor, spirala dubla era de fapt cordonul ombilical, legatura dintre mama si copil.
Ca o confirmare din neolitic vine aceasta imagine cioplita in piatra, descoperita in Alger.

Researches try to understand what women want and what they always wanted, as this is a possible key to decode the secret of traditional textile arts. Until recently, the peasant carpets, their clothes and jewels were not classified as 'art' and the women who created them not respected as 'authors'.
The berber carpets caught attention of many specialists, including Paul Klee, for their primitive / authentic expression. The berber women didn't have much opportunity to emancipate, they lived secluded, far from influences of various other cultures and beliefs. Their carpets express their feelings and hopes in such honest manner that it hurts.
It seems that the happiest moments of a berber woman is pregnancy, a time when she can feel the baby growing inside and belongs only to herself.
Giving birth was felt like a loss and they used to sing a lament like for a death; the new born, once alive, could not avoid death. (postpartum depression is well-known)
The double spiral was the ombilical cord, symbol for the strong connection between mother and child. In their dialects, the berbers used the same word for spiral like for navel.
As confirmations, stands this image from neolithic, carved in rock, discovered in Alger. There is a spiral in the animal's belly and another one outside the body. Head & horns or 'mutton horns' is always linked with virility and cult of fertility.
Double spirals appear also on Cucuteni ceramic and on our clothes.
But this doesn't mean they must have the exact same meaning. Each culture filtred the symbols before adopting them, making them fit their own world. (see the yeasterday story about the tulip).

The TULIP

The Tulip

Like many other goodies and beautiful things, the tulip 'comes' from Persia, where it was first appreciated and cultivated. In Romanian, we keep the original name: lalea, as in persian lale (laleh). Other nations, far from Balkans, call it 'tulip' from the word "turban" – "tulpan". In romanian we still use the word 'tulipan' for a certain head-cover for women.
The tulip was adopted as symbol by the dynasty established by Osman (the one who started the war against Byzantium and expansion of the ottomans). In old romanian, the turkish invadors were called "osmanlii".
The tulip became a sacred symbol not only because the shape resambles the palms held together in praying, but also because of the spelling, which was alike the word Allah.
Together with the carnation (aristocratic flower), the tulip is the official flower of the Ottoman Empire and it was designed with care and grace, caligrafically almost, in wonderful ceramic patterns.
During 16th century, Hungary and Transylvania were conquered by the Ottomans, while west of Hungary went under Austrian rule.
Surprizingly, the ethnic hungarian and german living in Transylvania, pick the flower of their muslim enemy to be a symbol of their own rezistance; symbol of national spirit; expression of their desire to be free from Hapsburgic domination. The tulip is now the flower of those who were persecuted by the catholic regim (protestants, unitarians) – but not orthodox!
Beautiful tulips were used everywhere: on leather coats, on ceramic products and textiles.
Therefore, it's Transylvania the first place where the tulip, in an abstract form, was woven onto oriental carpets; the oldest examples date from 17-18 centuries, found in protestant churches.
The Ottomans liked the idea, of course, and brought it back home, in Turkey, where this exact model became typical for the famous Bergama carpets, with their specific central medallions.
(see the Bergama textile museum).
In the meantime, orthodox romanians are imune to tulips and they continue to design their carpets according to the local flora and their ancient traditions. Motifs like: lilly-of-the-valley, mallow, wheat are most loved in south-west of Romania; while motifs like: wheat, vine, basil flower – are most loved in north-east of Romania.

In romana, patram numele ei, ca in persana = lale (laleh).
In sec. 16, Ungaria si Transilvania ajung sub dominatie otomana – vestul Ungariei trecand sub stapanire Austriaca.
In Transilvania, surpriza, apare pentru prima data laleaua reprezentata pe covoarele orientale, in sec. 17 – 18, (covoare folosite in biserici protestante).
